15 Most Romantic Hotels in San Diego for Couples (By Area & Budget)
This article describes my recommendations (as a local) for the best hotels for couples in San Diego, broken out by the 5 major vacation areas, for all budgets.

Hotel Del Coronado
San Diego is a paradise for couples looking for a romantic getaway right here in the US! With its stunning coastline, charming neighborhoods, and vibrant SoCal culture, there’s no shortage of places to stay and explore. As a local San Diegan, I know all of the best spots for every budget.
I’ve compiled a list of my top hotel picks of where to stay in San Diego for couples, including a luxury option, a mid-range option, and a more affordable option for each of the major areas (La Jolla, Downtown, Pacific Beach, Mission Beach, and Coronado).
Plus, I’ll recommend a modern Vrbo rental in each area for a more homey experience if that’s more your vibe. Bonus: check out my article on saving money on Vrbo here.
Note that I put preference on hotels that are not part of major brands, like Marriott, Hilton, or IHG.
Short on time? Here’s the main takeaway:
Of all of these options, my two favorite hotels for couples visiting San Diego and my top recommendations are the Hotel Del Coronado and the Pacific Terrace Hotel. Both are fantastic beachside resorts you can’t go wrong with!
Which Area to Stay In
There are five main areas I recommend staying in. Here is a little bit about each one:
La Jolla: A picturesque coastal community known for its upscale shops, art galleries, and stunning ocean views; ideal for couples seeking a blend of luxury, and natural beauty. It is also the best spot for spotting marine life. I love La Jolla for the cliff views, wildlife, and paddleboarding around the cove.
Downtown San Diego: Vibrant city with skyscrapers, theaters, and a lively nightlife scene; perfect for couples who enjoy city living, fine dining, and unparalleled access to entertainment not found elsewhere in San Diego. Downtown is my go-to for a fun date night; rooftop cocktails at the Pendry’s bar never disappoint.
Pacific Beach: Laid-back surfer beach town with a youthful vibe, popular for its beach, boardwalk, and casual dining options; great for couples looking to relax, surf, and soak up the California sun in a setting that epitomizes coastal living. Pacific Beach is my favorite spot to watch sunset!
Mission Beach: A lively beachside community with a boardwalk, Belmont Park’s amusement park, and a variety of water activities; ideal for couples seeking excitement, beachfront fun, and a nostalgic beach town atmosphere. Mission Beach is great for when I need something more lively than the beach alone.
Coronado: A charming island retreat just across the bay from Downtown San Diego, featuring sprawling pristine beaches, historic architecture, and the iconic Hotel del Coronado; perfect for couples desiring a romantic escape with a mix of relaxation, luxury, and old-world charm that is unbeatable. Coronado is my favorite; nothing beats its beautiful beach.
